Combining the technical power of generative AI with the participatory power of open education to make learning more affordable, effective, and meaningful

The OELMs Initiative

Creating Open Educational Language Models to increase learner engagement with evidence-based study practices

Open Model Weights

Large language models whose weights can be copied, edited, and shared

OER Content

OER that provide models with subject-matter expertise in order to improve accuracy and reduce hallucinations

Learning Activities

Openly licensed instructions that enable models to create evidence-based, highly effective study activities

Coordination Service

Open source software that brings all the OELMs components together

OELMs Workshops

During OELMs workshops, faculty and students work together to:

  • Curate and create OER for context augmentation
  • Select discipline-appropriate, evidence-based learning activities
  • Curate and create instructions that prompt LLMs to facilitate the learning activities
  • Peer review the work of others

The workshops result in evidence-based, generative AI-powered, peer-reviewed OELMs that support learners using existing textbooks, courseware, and other course materials.
